For beginners these are some Basics Indian Classical Music concepts to start with,

Swaras:

There are Seven Main Swaras सात स्वर present in Indian Classical Music.

1) Sa: SHADAJ

सा (षड्ज)

2) Re: RISHABH

रे   (रिषभ)

3) Ga: GANDHAR

ग   (गंधार)

4) Ma: MADHYAM

म   (मध्यम)

5) Pa: PANCHAM

प   (पंचम)

6) Dha: DHAIVAT

ध   (धैवत)

7) Ni: NISHAD

नि  (निषाद)

Type of Swaras:

There are three different types present,

1) Shudha Swara(शुद्ध स्वर):

    There are Seven Shudha Swaras present as below, 

    S R G M P D N

2) Komal Swara(कोमल स्वर):

    There are Four Komal Swaras present as below.

    R G D N

    Here we are using _ symbol to differentiate to Komal Swaras

3) Teevra Swara(तीव्र स्वर):

    There is only one Teevra Swara present    M’

Saptak (सप्तक ):

Group of seven Swaras called Saptak. In one Saptak we have, Seven Shudh, Four Komal and One Teevra, like this we have total 12 Swaras in one Saptak.

We have Three Saptaks as below,

1) Mandra Saptak(मंद्र सप्तक):

These will be positioned to left of Madya Saptak. The Swara in this Saptak will be use in low pitch. We will be using , symbol to indicate Mandra Swaras

E.g.   S, R, G, M, P, D, N     

2) Madhya Saptak (मध्य सप्तक):  

 The Swaras present in this Saptak will be in middle pitch.

3) Taar Saptak (तार सप्तक):  

These will be present to right hand side to Madhya Saptak. These will be pitched high. We will be using ` symbol to indicate them.

Aaroh(आरोह):

If we are moving from low pitch to high pitch we call it as Aaroh.

Avroh(अवरोह):

If we are moving from high pitch to low pitch we call it as Avroh.
